Rain forest toucan. Toucans are found in south and central america in the canopy layer of the rainforest. Their largest numbers are in southern brazil and down into northern argentina but they can be seen as far north as the amazon river basin. They are a very compact bird with a short body short neck and small wings.
When they sleep they turn thier heads around and tuck their bills under their wings and tail. Toucans rarely descend from the rain forest canopy. They tend to hop more than they fly.
The white throated toucan and the channel billed toucan are common throughout the amazon rain forest. Tocos are the only type of toucans that do not primarily live in the rainforest. Toucans are another icon of the amazon rainforest.
Toco toucans are found solely in south america. They actually prefer semi open areas with scattered trees. They have a stereotypical behavior when gulping down fruit and tilt the head back to feed.
Their bright colors provide good camouflage in the dappled light of the rainforest canopy. Mainly fruit diurnal toucans have large brightly coloured bills with prominent colourful markings on their plumage. Toco toucans feed either individually or in small flocks in the canopy.
The toucan is very important to the rainforest because they help to disperse seeds from the fruits and berries they eat. Up to 63 cm diet.
